BioTalent Insights: Naila Aslam’s journey in life sciences

This month (January 2025), our BioTalent consultants had the privilege of sitting down with the inspiring Naila Aslam for an exclusive industry insights session. Her journey, marked by resilience, adaptability, and a deep passion for life sciences, offered invaluable lessons for professionals at every stage of their careers.

Naila’s academic journey began with a degree in Biomedical Sciences at Queen Mary University, which laid the foundation for her transition into the life sciences industry. She later pursued a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery, specialising in pediatrics, before navigating a career that spanned clinical research, pharmacovigilance, and medical advisory roles. Her story is one of determination and adaptability, demonstrating how a strong foundation and a willingness to embrace change can lead to remarkable achievements.

However, her path was not without challenges. Naila shared how a life-threatening car accident became a pivotal moment in her journey. It was an experience that tested her resilience but also solidified her resolve to make an impact in the field. Her ability to overcome adversity and continue pursuing her goals is a testament to her strength and determination.

Throughout her career, Naila has held a variety of roles, working across clinical, pharmacovigilance, and medical advisory positions. She emphasised the importance of pivotal roles such as Qualified Person for Pharmacovigilance (QPPV) and Qualified Person (QP), highlighting their critical contributions to public health and patient safety. These positions, often behind the scenes, ensure that medications meet rigorous safety standards and regulations, directly impacting lives around the world.

Naila also provided insights into the evolving landscape of the life sciences industry. She discussed the ongoing effects of Brexit on the UK’s life sciences sector, highlighting both opportunities and challenges. From regulatory shifts to market dynamics, her perspective offered a nuanced understanding of how these changes continue to shape the industry.

One of the most inspiring aspects of Naila’s story is her advice to those entering or advancing within the field. She encouraged aspiring professionals to “get your foot in the door” and explore different areas to discover what truly ignites their passion. Her own career journey—which has seamlessly integrated skills from one role into another—underscores the importance of adaptability and lifelong learning in this ever-evolving industry.

The session concluded with a discussion on the broader life sciences pipeline, covering everything from basic research and drug discovery to clinical trials, product launch, and post-market activities. Naila’s ability to connect these stages to real-world impact made the session both educational and inspiring.

Naila’s journey is a powerful reminder of the importance of resilience, curiosity, and adaptability. Her story serves as an inspiration to all of us in the life sciences community, reinforcing the idea that challenges can be stepping stones to success and that passion and determination can drive meaningful change in the world.
